I am a computer geek of sorts and I like to try new things. When I got the chance to upgrade from Vista Professional, I jumped at it. I like to keep up with change. I have a Dell Inspiron 6400 laptop that has an ATI Mobility Radeon X1300 video chip. It turned out that finding drivers for that chip was the biggest problem that I had with the upgrade.I tried downloading the newest ATI Catalyst Suite from the AMD web site and installed it into the laptop. It installed okay and I was able to set the resolution that I had with Vista.

At one point, I had to restart me laptop and that’s when the headaches began. As the laptop shut down, I got a blue screen of death (BSOD) and an with the culprit being ATI2DVAG.dll. I searched and searched and couldn’t find a solution. I tried all different types of fixes that I found on the internet without any joy.

I downloaded older versions of the ATI driver and tried to install them. Sometimes, I was successful and sometimes I was not. In any case, nothing worked. I finally removed all the ATI drivers from my system, restarted and had Windows 7 load in a generic VGA driver. My system worked but I could not get to the resolution that I had before and one of my favorite screen savers would not work because of a direct x problem.After hours of looking, I happened onto the DriverHeaven site where I found and their program Mobility Modder. It was the answer to my problems.

Their newest version added support for Windows 7 drivers. The process was not difficult. Rather than explain each step, jump to their and follow the directions. The site claims that nothing bad is added to your system using their process.Make sure that you follow the directions and I hope that you find the same success that I did.

The only way out of it I could find was to disable all drives but my CD drive, boot directly from the Windows 7 install CD and then install from there. After this I had a working computer but with a reduced screen resolution (and also no DirectX and no Aero). I used the instructions here to install the modded AT drivers and now my Inspiron is working perfectly.I am slightly worried by the three unknown Base System Devices listed in Device Manager but as everyhgting seems to work and prepared to ingnore them!My Dell Inspiron has 1.66mgz processor and 2gb Ram and so far with Windows 7 it flies. EricHerb, what resolution did you finally end up with?

The highest I can get with my X1300 on my Inspiron 6400 is 1280 x 800 with a 60 hertz refresh rate. This is both utilizing the drivers that now update with a fresh install of Win 7 (the ATI drivers are now included in Windows Update) and I also tried the Modder approach with ver 10 and a ver 8 of the ATI Catalyst drivers. All produced the same result except, of course, with the Modder approach I ended up with Catalyst control panel.FOR THE INDIVIDUAL WITH THE BASE SYSTEM DEVICE errors above, you need to download the Ricoh driver under the Chipset folder from the Dell website – R5C832 –.
